Dolly Parton
Press release — When the World Lost Dolly Parton
When the World Lost Dolly Parton – A New Biography: Facts • Myths • What Ifs Everybody knows Dolly Parton. The songs, the rhinestones, the movies, Dollywood, the jokes – and one of the most recognizable images in American popular culture. But how much of the story do we really know? And what did the world discover about her importance when she was suddenly gone? Dolly Parton – Facts • Myths • What Ifs is the first volume in the new More Music Stories series – an independent and unofficial biography that deliberately takes a different route through a famous life. Written and completed in the immediate aftermath of Dolly Parton’s death in August 2026, the book captures something most biographies cannot: the first global response to her absence. The opening chapter looks at how Nashville, East Tennessee, fellow artists, the media and millions of listeners reacted when the world suddenly had to imagine popular culture without Dolly Parton in it. From there, the book follows her extraordinary journey from the Smoky Mountains to Nashville, Hollywood, Dollywood and international icon status – but without attempting to document every album, tour or chart position. Instead, it stops where the stories become interesting. Why did Dolly refuse Elvis Presley the chance to record “I Will Always Love You”? How did that decision connect, almost twenty years later, to Whitney Houston turning the same song into a worldwide phenomenon? What really happened between Dolly and Porter Wagoner? Did she really lose a Dolly Parton lookalike contest? Where does documented fact end and the Dolly legend begin? And what might have happened if some of the biggest decisions of her career had gone another way? Along the way are the songs, triumphs, failures, business decisions, unlikely encounters and stories that became better – or less certain – with every retelling. Facts are the foundation. Myths are examined. The What Ifs begin where history could genuinely have taken another turn. Author Joe Formgren had already begun developing More Music Stories as a series about artists and bands whose stories reach beyond the music itself when news of Dolly Parton’s death changed the project overnight. Her story became the natural first volume – not only because of the extraordinary career she had built, but because the reaction to her death revealed, in real time, just how far beyond country music her cultural reach had travelled. Available internationally The English-language edition of Dolly Parton – Facts • Myths • What Ifs is now being distributed digitally through GoRead, with availability through major audiobook and e-book platforms including Storytel, BookBeat, Nextory and Audible.
